全景单词怎样教一个词

学习设计:Yuwei Xia·工程与界面:Yiwei Qin

认识一个词,不等于会用它

很多词我们一看就懂,自己却写不出来、用不对。通常是因为我们只记住了它的意思,而它怎样构成、常和哪些词一起出现、在句子里怎样运作,并没有学到。全景单词的学习设计,就是为了把这几部分一起补上。

认识一个词的三个维度

设计的出发点是词汇知识框架:认识一个词,意味着掌握它的词形、语义与运用。

词形 Form

它是怎样构成的?

词根词缀、同根词与相关词

语义 Meaning

它的意义边界在哪里?

核心义、词典义项与联想词

运用 Use

How Word360 teaches a word

Learning design: Yuwei Xia·Engineering and interface: Yiwei Qin

Knowing a word is not the same as using it

We understand many words the moment we see them, yet cannot write them or use them correctly. Usually we have learned only what the word means, not how it is built, which words it travels with, or how it behaves in a sentence. Word360's learning design is meant to teach all of these together.

Three dimensions of knowing a word

The starting point is a framework of word knowledge: knowing a word means knowing its form, meaning, and use.

Form

How is it built?

roots and affixes, word family, related words

Meaning

Where are the edges of its meaning?

core sense, dictionary senses, associated words

Use

How does it behave in a sentence?

grammar, sentence patterns, collocations

The three reinforce each other. Seeing how a word is built helps you understand what it means, its meaning shapes which words it combines with, and the combinations you use make the word easier to remember.

Turning the framework into a tool to think with

Knowing that there are three dimensions is not enough. Faced with a new word, a learner needs steps to follow. The design draws on the schema for the orienting basis of action (SCOBA): knowing a word is laid out as a visual guide, and the learner works through form, meaning, and use in turn instead of glancing at a definition and moving on.

Word360's learning cards are arranged along these three dimensions. They are that guide.

Learning vocabulary as a system

The third source is concept-based language teaching. Memorized one by one, every word stands alone. Once learners understand how word formation, meaning, and collocation work, new words connect to the ones they already know. The goal is a way of knowing words, not just a finished word list.

What this looks like in Word360

Question first, explanation second

Each learning card opens with a question, so you think before you read.

Notes organized by Form, Meaning, and Use

What you save is sorted along the three dimensions, and you review it along the same guide.

Next words that build on what you know

Recommendations choose your next words by their links of form, meaning, and use to words you have studied.

The word in your own sentence

Write a sentence with the target word, then refine it with AI hints and feedback until it reads clearly and naturally.

Research

In a study of seven learners using the tool, their vocabulary learning became more systematic and self-regulated.
